The Catholic University of America is a residential campus and we strongly believe in the benefits that on-campus living has to offer our first- and second-year students in terms of academic success, personal development and involvement within the CUA campus community.
To support this value, CUA requires all first- and second-year students to live on campus. As is the case on many residential campuses, the number of students who request housing or who are required to live on campus can temporarily be greater than available housing space. When this occurs, students are assigned to extended occupancy housing within the residence halls.
Who will be assigned to extended housing?
Some students required to live on campus have been assigned to extended occupancy housing. Priority for room assignments for new students is primarily based upon the dates that the enrollment deposit and housing application are received. The earlier the enrollment deposit and housing application are received, the higher the priority the student is given in the assignment process.
What is extended housing like?
In most cases, accommodations in double rooms have been tripled, the majority of which are in Centennial Village (CV) double rooms with baths. These rooms have more space than other CV rooms due to the sinks being in the bathroom rather than the bedroom. In a few cases triple rooms in Flather Hall have been designated as temporary quad rooms. As these are all permanent residential rooms, they already have Internet and cable service. Residents have been invited to select from several floor plans that include a variety of loft, bunk bed, and standard bed room layouts.
What will I be billed for my extended space?
All residents in extended occupancy spaces will receive a discounted rate for the fall semester. Students are charged the appropriate rate for the type of room they are assigned to. Therefore, if a resident moves to another assignment for the fall semester, s/he will receive a prorated refund for the time not spent in the extended assignment and a pro-rated charge for the time that will be spent in the new assignment. These charges will be available in MyHousing and on the student's account.
Will I have the opportunity to move?
We expect a limited number of spaces to become available prior to Orientation with additional spaces becoming available in the first eight weeks of classes. As vacancies become available, generally, the student assigned to the room whose housing application was received last will be reassigned. Any changes to assignments in extended occupancy housing will be communicated to all residents within the room. Housing Services can assist extended residents who need help in moving belongings to the new assignment.
What do rooms in extended housing look like?
Students assigned to extended housing rooms are invited to view different layouts designed for these rooms. Once you and your roommates have decided on which room layout option will best fit your plans, please email us by July 20th with the letter of your preferred layout. We will pre-set your room so that when you arrive in August your room is ready.
